89(2) SR 7 - Enrolled version - Bill Text SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 7 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Commodore John Weldon Koenig on the grand occasion of his 90th birthday; and WHEREAS, Weldon Koenig was born September 26, 1935, and grew up on his family's farm in Black Jack Springs; he excelled as a saxophone player in high school, and while enrolled as a first-generation college student at The University of Texas at Austin, he performed in the Longhorn Marching Band and devoted much of his time to the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps; he met his future wife, Nancy Louise Sowa, while completing training in Corpus Christi, and they married in 1958, shortly before he graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration; and WHEREAS, Ensign Koenig was quickly deployed at sea, and his distinguished career in the United States Navy spanned more than three decades and included service at numerous stations across the country and world; Nancy accompanied him to assignments in Hawaii and on the East Coast, and he commanded submarines such as the USSSimon Bolivar, as well as squadrons at the Newport News Shipyard, before he was ultimately promoted to the rank of commodore, or rear admiral, and became Director of Logistics and Security Assistance for the Pacific Command; …
