A RESOLUTION Honoring the life of Mrs. Victoria Travis Jackson and dedicating a road in her memory; and for other purposes. WHEREAS, Mrs. Victoria Travis Jackson devoted her life to fighting for equity and working alongside some of the most prominent figures in American political and social justice movements; and WHEREAS, born in 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. Jackson was educated at the historic David T. Howard High School, and at the age of 79, she enrolled at the Atlanta Metropolitan State College to demonstrate that the pursuit of knowledge has no expiration date; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Jackson was a central figure in the movement to tear down the "Peyton Wall," a concrete symbol of racial segregation in Atlanta; and WHEREAS, she transformed the City of Atlanta's education landscape and opportunities by demanding and securing better textbooks and facilities for underserved communities; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Jackson collaborated with numerous civil rights icons and leaders, including Mayor Maynard Jackson and Congressman John Lewis; and H. R. 1523 LC 39 5010 WHEREAS, Mrs. Jackson's life work serves as an enduring inspiration for current and future generations to continue the vital task of creating a more just and equitable society and it is abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized by dedicating a road in her memory. …
