HR1045LRB104 23488 ECR 39968 r HR1045 LRB104 23488 ECR 39968 r HR1045 LRB104 23488 ECR 39968 r HOUSE RESOLUTION WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to commend Kurtis Blow for his extraordinary contributions to music, culture, faith, and community service; and WHEREAS, Kurtis Blow helped shape hip hop's rise from the streets of New York into a global cultural movement, breaking barriers and paving the way for generations of artists; and WHEREAS, Kurtis Blow became the first rapper signed to a major record label, Mercury Records, in 1979, and in 1980, his landmark recording, "The Breaks", became the first rap single certified gold, establishing historic milestones that expanded opportunities for an emerging art form; and WHEREAS, Kurtis Blow, through his enduring recordings, including "Christmas Rappin'", "Basketball", and "If I Ruled the World", his starring role in the film Krush Groove, and his mentorship of fellow artists, has helped bring hip hop's creativity, stories, and spirit to audiences worldwide; and WHEREAS, Throughout Kurtis Blow's career, he has championed clean, uplifting hip hop rooted in values of peace, love, joy, and safe fun, using music to unite generations and HR1045- 2 -LRB104 23488 ECR 39968 r HR1045 - 2 - LRB104 23488 ECR 39968 r HR1045 - 2 - LRB104 23488 ECR 39968 r encourage young people in …
