*HR1502* Introduced Version HOUSE RESOLUTION No. ___ Introduced by: Bauer M ____________________________________ A HOUSE RESOLUTION celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., South Bend Chapter. Whereas, Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated, was founded nationally on January 13, 1913, on the campus of Howard University by 22 young women who had a calling to make a difference, particularly in the Black community; Whereas, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities worldwide. The sorority currently has over 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters located in over 11 countries; Whereas, The South Bend Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was the first Black Greek letter organization in the Michiana area. It was initially chartered as HR 1502/DI 140 2026 the Epsilon Mu Sigma chapter on December 3, 1955, at the historic LaSalle Hotel in South Bend by nine women who were part of a local group called the Sorors Club; Whereas, The Sorors Club was known for its successes in community service, education, and social endeavors and its members were enthusiastic and steadfast about continuing that work while serving the South Bend community; Whereas, The charter members of Epsilon Mu Sigma (now known as the South Bend Alumnae Chapter) were Kitty Bowden-Smith, …
