A BILL FOR An Act requiring the department of education to develop and administer a pilot program that authorizes school districts and charter schools to offer instruction in logic and critical thinking. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA: TLSB 6741YH (3) mb/jh H.F. 2470 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 256.20 Logic and critical thinking ---- pilot project. 1. The department shall develop and administer a voluntary pilot program that authorizes the board of directors of a school district and the governing boards of charter schools to offer instruction in logic and critical thinking for students in grades six through eight. 2. The voluntary pilot program shall be available for the school year beginning July 1, 2027, and the school year beginning July 1, 2028. 3. Instruction in logic and critical thinking may be offered in any of the following forms, at the discretion of the school district or charter school: a. A stand-alone course. b. An elective course. c. An interdisciplinary course embedded within existing curricular offerings. 4. During the pilot program, a participating school district or charter school may offer instruction in logic and critical thinking but shall not be required to mandate student completion of the instruction unless otherwise determined by the school district or charter school. 5.
