A BILL FOR An Act directing the department of transportation to study the use of biodegradable deicers on highways. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA: TLSB 2802XS (2) th/ns S.F. Section 1. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ---- BIODEGRADABLE DEICERS ---- STUDY AND REPORT. 1. The department of transportation shall study the use of biodegradable deicers, including beet juice, to treat and control the accumulation of ice and snow on highways. The department shall evaluate the environmental impact, practicality, and associated costs of using biodegradable deicers, including beet juice. 2. The department shall submit a report with its findings to the general assembly by January 1, 2027. EXPLANATION The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with the explanation's substance by the members of the general assembly. This bill directs the department of transportation (DOT) to study the use of biodegradable deicers, including beet juice, to treat and control the accumulation of ice and snow on highways. The DOT is required to evaluate the environmental impact, practicality, and associated costs of using biodegradable deicers, including beet juice, and submit its findings in a report to the general assembly by January 1, 2027.
