A RESOLUTION To commend Emerson Thom on being one of ten students selected to compete in the 25th Braille Challenge in Los Angeles. WHEREAS, Emerson Thom is a seven year old who has been blind since birth; he recently completed first grade gifted at Woodvale Elementary School in Lafayette, Louisiana; and WHEREAS, Emerson placed second at the Louisiana braille competition in Ruston, Louisiana; he will travel to Los Angeles this summer to compete against nine other first and second graders from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia at the 25th Braille Challenge; the competition will test a variety of skills, including reading comprehension, spelling, and proofreading; and WHEREAS, Emerson is most excited about the technology display that will be available at the contest; he loves reading about space and hopes to pursue a career as a space engineer; and WHEREAS, Emerson enjoys all of the same hobbies and adventures that sighted children love, including telling jokes, swimming, playing the piano, and riding his bike; and WHEREAS, Emerson Thom is a truly inspiring young man with a beautiful spirit and genuine passion for life, and he is most deserving of the highest recognition for his incredible achievements.
