A RESOLUTION Honoring the life and extending condolences to the family of the Honorable John J. Sweeney, Jr. WHEREAS, The Honorable John James Sweeney, Jr., former Pennsylvania State Senator, age 99, of Haverford, peacefully passed into eternal life on October 2, 2026; and WHEREAS, Senator Sweeney's father passed when he was nine years of age, and he honored his father by caring for his mother and sisters; and WHEREAS, The challenges Senator Sweeney faced as he grew up laid the foundation for his future success; and WHEREAS, As a young man, Senator Sweeney worked local jobs and attended St. Gregory's Grade School and St. Thomas More High School, graduated early to serve in the United States Army and Reserves, was stationed in occupied Japan and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant; and WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Senator Sweeney served in many roles, most notably as a Pennsylvania State Senator representing the 26th District from 1974 to 1978, being the first Democrat to be elected to this position; and WHEREAS, Senator Sweeney worked as a Federal Government administrator and analyst, retiring after 30 years; and WHEREAS, Senator Sweeney was also a vice president of a mortgage company; and WHEREAS, Senator Sweeney was a member of the Pennsylvania Public Television Network Commission and the Irish-American representative to the Pennsylvania Heritage Affairs Commission; …
