A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging Congress to repeal the estate tax. [ADDED: WHEREAS, the money a person leaves behind at death usually has been taxed by the federal government at least once; and] [ADDED: WHEREAS, the estate tax can be especially difficult for farm and ranch families to paybecause assets are often in the form of land and agricultural equipment, but not in cash; and] [ADDED: WHEREAS, heirs of farm and ranch operations, or other generational family businesses, sometimes have to downsize or sell out entirely in order to pay the estate tax; and] [ADDED: WHEREAS, economic growth and job creation would arguably be greater if the estate tax were eliminated, thus creating more societal wealth and more revenue for government; and] [ADDED: WHEREAS, Senator John Thune is sponsoring a bill in Congress to eliminate the estate tax;] [ADDED: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Senate of the One Hundred First Legislature of the State of South Dakota, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that Congress be urged to repeal the estate tax.] Underscores indicate new language. [DELETED: Overstrikes] indicate deleted language.
