Tennessee SB2114: AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 55, Chapter 10; Title 55, Chapter 8 and Title 55, Chapter 9, relative to driver courses for traffic offenses.
Status: Chaptered, May 26, 2026
Fiscal Summary NOT SIGNIFICANT Bill Summary Present law requires an officer to issue a citation to persons arrested for a violation of certain traffic offenses punishable as a misdemeanor in lieu of an arrest. Such persons may elect not to contest the charge and, instead, pay a fine and costs to the clerk of court rather than making an appearance in court. This bill allows such a person who is charged with speeding to register for a department-approved driver education course. Up to five points will be removed from the person's driving record upon successful completion of the course within 90 days of the conviction. ON MARCH 23, 2026, THE HOUSE ADOPTED AMENDMENT #1 AND PASSED HOUSE BILL 1891, AS AMENDED. AMENDMENT #1 makes the following changes: Changes that the approved driver education courses must be available online from the court clerk's website to the department of transportation's website. Requires a provider of a department-approved driver education course to provide the department, through the department's website, certificates of completion within 30 days of course completion. Such a provider must also provide information to each person who successfully completes the course regarding the department's process for the removal of points charged to the person's driving record.
