A RESOLUTION to honor Robert "Percy" Person on the celebration of his eighty-ninth birthday. WHEREAS, the members of this General Assembly take great pleasure in paying tribute to a gentleman who has provided excellent service and even better advice to his clients during his distinguished tenure as the proprietor of Percy's Shine Service in downtown Nashville's historic Arcade; and WHEREAS, while he has owned and operated this particular business for thirty-three years, Robert "Percy" Person has shined more than 500,000 pairs of shoes during the course of his nearly eighty-year career; and WHEREAS, Percy Person doesn't merely shine shoes; this humorous sage often holds forth on life in a manner that both entertains and enlightens his loyal clientele; and WHEREAS, Mr. Person began shining shoes in 1948, when he was a tender eleven years of age, to help his single mother make ends meet; and WHEREAS, in the nearly eight decades since, Percy Person has shined, stained, and repaired the footwear of thousands of politicians, lawyers, business people, and other downtown workers; countless mayors; a few governors; and even select members of the General Assembly; and WHEREAS, Percy has become an institution in downtown Nashville, tending to his trade with an artistic perfection that has earned him the undisputed title of "King of Shoe Artists"; and WHEREAS, gifted in his …
